As part of the Modernizations series, 1000HZ presents performers from different corners of the world. What unites them is the role of pioneers introducing local musical cultures to new regional styles, new instruments, tones and sound spaces. [The title] Modernizations can be understood in two ways. The series documents a ‘fascinating crime’, i.e. the gradual erasing of local differences which was described by Theodor Adorno and other scholars. On the other hand, it shows how performing artists make use of entirely new means of expression that changed and developed local identities.

Dubiny is a musical band the story of which has become an excellent example of what is here referred to as ‘modernizations’. The leader of the band, Piotr Skiepko, has been garnering musical inspirations and experiences from his young age – by watching musicians as a boy, by playing around with self-made electric musical instruments, by performing as a member of a regional folk group. In the early 1980s, all this allowed him to launch a project combining electronic music with bigbit rock, and sometimes - disco arrangements with local theme songs, melodies and harmonies. The band was a short-term but dazzling success; the musicians had the house packed at their concerts, recorded their compositions to cassettes and released them semi-officially.

Well, Dubiny is back! And in the meantime, their music has gained another meaning: now it is also good for recollecting, listening, having fun and thinking. The CD is co-financed by the Podlasie Voivodeship.
